(not 100% guaranteed just yet - but it's one of the very few candidates even having an impact on that test suite; the only other candidate is libevdev, which seems less likely)
In the past openQA had shown quite some variations for different distributions, DEs, installed fonts, libfreetype versions, hinting settings, ...
Expecting an SVG renderer to produce (almost) bit exact results is IMHO broken. Especially edges with slight differences in aliasing can add quite some noise, even when images are visually equivalent.

hi, I took a quick look on matplotlib github: in a testsuite they still use inkscape <1 and it seems they don't even have any issue about breaks with the new inkscape. So if it breaks it would catch them unprepared. I can investigate further and if I find something risky I will file an issue.
