Doesn't that resolve in invalid .xml files, with untranslated tags? This won't work as you'd want it to work (not that this would be a problem for TW, but you might want to check on that for the older releases.
no, xml files for msgfmt --xml input are valid xml files already.

hmm.. actually, you're right.. inkscape does use the 'modern' method of translating, not the original method of using _summary and such... so my bad.. all good here.
