libgme (http://code.google.com/p/game-music-emu/) emulates the sound chips of different systems so music from its games can be played. gstreamer-0_10-plugins-bad uses it. Believe it or not, there is a public for this -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_music_culture

In its current form, as shared library, has been around for ~2 years. But the source is a lot older (http://slack.net/~ant/libs/audio.html#Game_Music_Emu), at least 5 years old.

I verified my SNES music plays correctly. It has been tested also through Debian (http://packages.debian.org/source/sid/game-music-emu)

No known security issues

It's LGPLv2.1+
